Buy Quaint, Support Women in Developing Countries

June 13, 2015No Comments

Recently, we've been ruminating on what it means to support women, to be a feminist. Quaint has always believed in providing a safe space for women and nonbinary folk to express themselves, and to publish work that might not fit well with mainstream presses. We are committed to supporting victims of abuse, and this, coupled with our exclusionary publication policies, has often been a contentious issue.

While we don't plan to stop advocating for women "in our own backyard," within the poetry community, and in America at large, it strikes us that feminism is only truly intersectional when we do what we can to look beyond our immediate circumstances, when we look beyond the feminist issues that affect us directly.

That's why, until July 1st, Quaint will be donating 50% of all sales from Quaint Issue 4 (both the print and PDF edition) to Heifer International. Heifer is an internationally recognized accredited charity organization that seeks to assist communities in developing countries in a sustainable, on-going fashion--not by buying them resources that will become depleted, but by giving these communities the tools and education they need to self-sustain.

What's really cool about Heifer is they have many different funding packages to choose from, including a range of donation options specifically designed to empower women. Take a look at their video below to see a first hand account of how their programs work:

Quaint would really like to aim for the package that sends a girl to school, and with your help, we think we can achieve this! Otherwise, we'll distribute the funds raised into the women's self help group package.

How this works: Through July 1st, 50% of the funds earned from sales of the print edition of Quaint 4, or ANY of the PDF editions of Quaint, will be kept aside to be donated to Heifer come July 2nd. We'll keep you updated on Twitter and Facebook as to how we're going, and hopefully you'll share pictures of your sweet hard-copy Issue 4 on Instagram, tagging us (quaint.magazine) and using the hashtag #QuaintLovesHeifer. We've lowered the cost of shipping on the print issues, plus made it available to ship internationally, but if it's still a little out of your price range, never fear! Our PDFs are donation based, so you can pay as little or as much as you like--50% will still go to Heifer.

Why 50%? Quaint has always been (and always will be) not for profit. Everything we make on submission fees, donations, sales of the journal, and merchandise goes straight back into paying our contributors, paying our Submittable and Duotrope fees, paying for the cost of tables at conventions like AWP, and paying printing costs for hard-copy issues. So think of this as a win-win! Help us to continue to advocate for and support marginalized folk, while also printing a kickass magazine, and extending our help, wherever possible, to the women we DON'T see every day--the women we don't know, the women we may never meet.

You can snag your Quaint goodies here! Let's get the ball rolling!

(Please note: Merch sales aren't included in the Heifer donation drive, as the platform we use to make & sell merch pays us quarterly, making keeping track of sales and money a little more difficult).
