You Bring out my Worst Side – Emily O’Neill

……………………………north & water are daydreams
heaven some plastic fairytale / wake up or we’re finished

……………………………………………………………………….wake up crashing into all I want, moon
dropped low—dark side falling
……………into the map you navigate, eyes closed

……………….wake up cold grease & neon light, no candle
wax splatter to mark where treble faltered but

…………….where might we end
there, stupid heaven again
…………………………………….cake & sweat & rewind

you came & broke the perfect girl
……………………………………………..beat in her face with take-backs
………………………….hurricane halo, name engraved in sky

…………………………………………………I’m conscious but I’m lonely
save muse for some other lovely

………………….tell them how patient I
………..how shy….. how close….. how permanent
how misstep left the wick lit
…………how the stairwell is painted blue
……………………….& the hinges are all breathless

how when I dance every night’s my birthday

wake up & run the red light
…………….I want you & I want to disappear

doesn’t hurt rule us by blood oath?
I’m accepting applications / begin with body slipping
………………………………………………………..from promise towards purpose

…………………….I say no
you’re blind / your plans / you’re hoarse & unraveling
…………………………..into the lawn like mist

you’re every reason why regret sets me on fire
